Free Essays on Phenomenal Woman That’s Me

The poem, â€Å"Phenomenal Woman†, written by Maya Angelou has touched the lives of many women. The title itself has the ability to grasp the interests of the reader. The word phenomenal means outstanding, excellent and extraordinary, therefore making it the perfect word to describe a woman who is as magnificent as she is. This four stanza poem expresses the thoughts and feelings of a proud and confident woman. These days women are judged by their exterior and the values of what is inside seem to be forgotten. The theme of this poem is very evident. In the first line, â€Å"Pretty women wonder where my secret lies†, lets us know that the beauty described through out the poem is internal. The second line says, â€Å"I’m not cute or built to suit a model’s fashion size†, a woman’s outside doesn’t have to be perfect if her personality makes up for that. Beauty on the outside does not always get you what you want. Angelou uses explanations of a woman’s physical body to describe the amazing woman that is really on the inside. Although her body may not be perfect or even attractive she uses it to describe femininity. Confidence is a perfect display of inner beauty. The line, â€Å"The stride of my steps†, gives a mental picture of a courageous straight postured woman walking with her head held high not caring about the way others t hink about her. This shows that she is not ashamed of her looks and is very proud of who she is. She leaves a bit of mystery about herself by not giving in to every man that approaches her. Her gracefulness and positive feminine ways get her what other women are envious of, which is respect. These physical characteristic that she describes gives the image of a beautiful woman when in reality it’s not that way at all. Othello asks Lodovico to stay and hear what he has to say, he believes he deserves to speak because he has helped out the state of Venice in the past. He asks Lodovico not to speak of Othello as he really is. He tells him not to downplay things and make them seem less serious then they are and not to exaggerate. Othello wants the people in Venice to know that he is someone who loved to much, but was not wise about it. He wanted them to know he was not of jealous nature, but once he was manipulated by Iago he became confused and worked himself into a frenzy. Othello was more vulnerable to manipulation since he trusted and loved so easily. He claims he is not a suspicious person, but was wrought, pounded and shaped by beating with a hammer. Othello says â€Å"Of one not easily jealous, but, being wrought,† (399). Iago worked and shaped Othello until he was just how he wanted, just as a blacksmith does with iron or silver articles. Othello realises that all of the good things he has done dont matter anymore, because of the death of Desdemona. Even though he knows this he still wants to be remembered as a briliant soldier who risked his life many times for Venice. He specifically talks about when he was in Aleppo, a Turish city, and found a â€Å"malignant Turk† beating a Venetian. Othello kills the Turk in order to save the Venetian, even though that crime is punishable by death. Othello calls the Turk a â€Å"cirumcised dog† because Turks are muslims, and Muslims are circumcised. Othello was a fine man with a harsh fate. Had not been manipulated by others he would have lived an admirable life. He regrets many things in his life, though I dont believe marrying Desdemona is one of those things. His decisions were greatly effected by his emotions. He was blinded by Iago since he did not listen to his heart, and let his emotions get in the way. Othellos beautiful language and regret in this speech make him seem nobel again. Although since he denies the terrible things he has done, and the role he played in Iagos plan he cannot be fully forgiven.

Troubling Short and Long-Term Violent Media Effects on Children - Essay Example The two articles provide compelling evidence that violent media has significant short-term and long-term effects on children’s development of aggressive thoughts, emotions, and actions, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, intelligence, and parenting styles and characteristics. The two articles are similar in examining the effects of violent media on children. Anderson and Bushman conducted a meta-analysis on studies that investigated the impacts of playing video games on aggression, physiological arousal, or prosocial behaviour. They wanted to know if playing violent media is connected to aggressive thoughts, emotions, or actions, or all of the above, and what the underlying mechanisms are for these connections. Huesmann et al. also studied the effect of violent media on children, particularly how watching violent TV in childhood affected later young adult aggression. They conducted a follow-up study of the 1977 longitudinal study that the authors did on 557 children w ho lived in Chicago. They considered other factors too that can explain the media-behaviour relationship, including preference for violence and third variables. These two articles are both interested in studying the effects of media violence on children’s aggression levels. Though these studies share similar general research topics on violent media effects on children, the two articles are different in their research designs because Anderson and Bushman used a meta-analysis design, while Huesmann et al. continued their longitudinal study.

English speech Essay Morning/Afternoon, fellow students. As all of you have had the unfortunate task to study belonging as part of the hsc, and many of you are sitting here zoning my speech out but belonging to people and place is one of the main reasons why we want to belong. In Orson Scott Card’s novel Enders Game it is a major struggle for young Ender Wiggin and he feels like he will never belong. Belonging is not welcomed but is still portrayed deeply in Sean Penn’s film Into the Wild with Chris McCandless never fully understanding the concept of belonging. These texts demonstrate belonging both differently and similarly to Steven Herrick’s free-verse novel The Simple Gift. The human kind has always looked for people to belong to as it is one the most basic instincts for us humans to look for. Sean Penn had the challenge to demonstrate the life of Chris McCandless. At the age 22 from an affluent background Chris felt like he did not belong in the life he was living and unlike most people his age he got and left his life behind him and â€Å"risked†¦ a relentlessly lonely path†. Penn uses narration to explain how Chris had the ability to belong to a father like man (Ron) but instead Chris continued to walk down the lonely path. Through the flashbacks in scenes on Chris’s life with Rainey and Jan Burres, who practically begged Chris to stay with them and have the chance to belong but still he didn’t take that chance. Sean Penn is able to illustrate that Chris’s understanding of belonging was obscure. But still Chris couldn’t find the ability to belong to other people and took his whole lifetime to understand that â€Å"Happiness is only real when shared.† In The Simple Gift Billy a similar person to Chris but unlike Chris, Billy had the ability to belong to people and was able to settle down because of his sense of belonging. Orson Scott Card’s protagonist Andrew Wiggin also known as ‘Ender’ was born into a post-modern society and he is referred to as genetically perfect and intellectually smarter and the age of 8 he was asked to leave home and go to train to become the best military leader. The men in charge have one job and it â€Å"is to produce the best soldiers in the World†. Through the uses of irony of creating a child soldier Mazor Rackham (man in charge) assumed that there  would no consequences to Ender’s life, from creating a child military leader, thus this caused Ender to never belong to anyone. Graff (the man who trained Ender) â€Å"wanted to help Ender† but would rather create a better soldier. Through the contradiction of Graff wanting to help Ender but Graff being determined to create a better soldier, which forced Ender into isolation and had no one to belong too. Orson Scott Card is able to portray the effects of lack of belonging on Ender and show how it affects people. Alike to the Simple Gift and Into the Wild both protagonists never felt belonging with their parents. Even both characters may not have faced such a harsh lack of belonging compared to Ender but both Billy and Chris still new the toll it can take on someone. Most people want to belong to a place which causes people to search for belonging and the ability to call a place home. Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game try’s to demonstrate, how Ender struggled to belong to places but believed that Battle School was â€Å"the only place in the universe where he belonged.† Card uses hyperbole to help the audience understand that the child Ender had made an attachment and belonged to place and thought it as home. When Ender got forced to move on from the only place Ender liked â€Å"He hated it. He wanted to go back home, back to the Battle School.† Through short sentencing Card is able to illustrate that when ender arrives back to his original home he did not belong. The audience is able to understand the desperation for young Ender to get back to his home and belong. Similar to Ender’s Game, The Simple Gift Billy did not now what to do when he knew that he might have to leave his newly founded home. In Sean Penn’s film Into the Wild belonging is not part of Chris’s vocabulary. Chris as a young man had lived in more places than most people can imagine. Chris’s lack of belonging to these places causes him to keep moving from place to place even though he had the chance to belong. Through compressed time of the film shows Chris constantly moving around and demonstrate to the audience that Chris does not understand belonging and missed the happiness he was looking for. At the end of Chris’s life he is able to determine what the true meaning of happiness is and that he had the chance to belong. Through the close up of Chris’s last breath facial expressions shows sadness that Chris had places to belong too but in his dyeing breath he knew that he had missed his chance . Through  this the audience is able to understand that Chris knew that he had the chance to belong to many places. Even though both Ender’s Game and The Simple Gift had places to belong both Ender at his house and Billy at Nowheres Vile, knew how it felt not to belong to a place. Fitting into a place or being able to belong to a group of people is a significant part of the normal person’s life. Sean Penn was able to direct Into the Wild and is able to portray Chris and his very different understanding of belonging. Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game was able to illustrate the effects of what little belonging can do people. Through these texts and The Simple Gift all three composers were able to demonstrate similar and differently the effects of belonging to people and place.

The Supernatural in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde Essay

If you can get past most of the superficial and unlikeable characters in The Picture of Dorian Gray, this story does indeed have its place in the horror genre. While I understand the setting and the characters were a reflection of the actual class distinctions during the Victorian time period, I found the shallowness and narcissism of Dorian Gray and his circle of acquaintances tedious. "Fops" came to mind more than once along with "don't these people have a purpose other than to dine out and indulge themselves?" Even the women were for the most part portrayed as imbeciles. It almost hurt to read the section in chapter four where Lord Henry's wife appears for the first and only time: "She was usually in love with somebody, and, as her passion was never returned, she had kept all her illusions. She tried to look picturesque, but only succeeded in being untidy. Her name was Victoria, and she had a perfect mania for going to church" (Wilde 41). The only likeable main character is Basil Hallward who seems to have a conscience, and although it proves his undoing, he is the only one that tries to save Dorian. I think several elements of the supernatural came into play in the story: the painting which had the capacity to change in showing Dorian's sins and evildoings, the use of mirrors, and direct and indirect references to selling one's soul to the devil. The very fact that the painting changes, places this story in the realm of the supernatural. In The Element Encyclopedia of Ghosts and Hauntings by Theresa Chung, supernatural is defined as: "Any experience, occurrence, manifestation or object that is beyond the laws of nature and science and whose understanding may be said to lie with religion, magic or the mystical" (480). Af... ...years. Lord Henry enjoyed influencing Dorian: "He was conscious--and the thought brought a gleam of pleasure into his brown agate eyes--that it was through certain words of his, musical words said with musical utterance, that Dorian Gray's soul had turned to this white girl and bowed in worship before her. To a large extent the lad was his own creation" (Wilde 51). What makes Lord Henry's influence worse is his utter lack of understanding how harmful it was, and, how little he really knew Dorian, evidenced towards the end when Dorian practically tells him he murdered Basil. Observation and Gross Motor Skills

Observing a child can be a fascinating experience. It’s amazing to see how a child can view something so different than an adult. I recently observed my niece. Her name is Unique. She was born February 9, 2011, and is now two years and four months old. I observed Unique on June 4, 2013 from one until about three in the afternoon, at daycare with just her teacher present. After leaving daycare I continued to observe her for a few more hours once she got to her grandmother’s house, with her aunts present. Unique has one older brother and has just started daycare this year. Unique has amazing fine and gross motor skills, which is having a better control over her hand and finger movements; also having ability to control her arm and leg movements more. I watched her turn pages in her Dora book without any problem. As she finished looking through her book we scribbled together. Unique held the crayons perfectly, with both her thumb and her finger. I also watched Unique climb up and down off the sofa. We went outside for a few and I noticed how well she kicked the ball back and forth with her aunts that are ten and eleven. Unique gets together with daycare friends and begins to play games such as matching, coloring, going to play together outside. As they come together everyone is happy and enjoying their selves. I notice that everyone had a smile on their faces and in a good mood, everyone interacting in a good way, there wasn’t any negativity. When getting together with adults she can be very alert and outgoing. She repeats a lot of what is being said. Unique talks and listens to what is being told. Unique and teachers are in the classroom having learning time. Teachers ask questions and sing songs as she answer the questions and sing along. Cooperating and enjoying learning time with the other kids. These observations can tell a lot about Unique and her development in many areas. Her development in different areas is good and understanding. I would consider the way she interacts and acts with others appropriate for her age. She is advanced and gets along with others very well when doing things such as talking, playing and laughing with others.

These are; Cooper and Baglioni (1988), and Robertson, Cooper and Williams (1990). The home/work interface aspect of the model was originally part of the individual differences section, but in 1988, this was incorporated as a sixth source of stress. The reason behind this was the increasing recognition that demands and conflicts from work could act as potential sources of stress at home and could also be transferred and influence work-related well-being. Also, in 1990, Robertson et al introduced coping strategies into the model as another aspect of individual differences. Although there are several features of the work environment, which have been associated with stress, Cooper and Marshall (1976) developed one of the earliest classifications which is still widely used today (Newell 1995). Criticisms Claire Harris (1998) criticizes Coopers model as describing a model of organizational stress rather than occupational stress. She argued that it was vague in relation to particular types of job-related stress. This is evident from the sources of stress, with only those intrinsic to job being occupational stresses and the rest being generic to organizations rather than occupations. Several researchers including Cooper have noticed this problem and have used the measurement of stressors for the particular occupation under study. Cooper and Bramwell (1992) for example, assessed mental health satisfaction and sickness absence from looking at a group of managers and shop floor workers. Another criticism with this model is its simplistic left to right characterization of the stress process. In Lazarus Folkmans (1986) transactional model of stress, the extent to which a stressor in the environment results in strain outcomes depends on the interaction between the individual and their environment. The model also includes feedback loops which are not accounted for in Coopers model. Coopers model has also been criticized because it fails to show how individual differences relate to other parts of the model. Coopers model fails to account for organizational characteristics as moderators of the stressor strain relationship and does not indicate whether coping and personality have direct influences on stress outcomes or if they are combined to have an interactive influence. Although Cooper has incorporated individual differences in the model, further evidence is required to establish whether or not these differences have a direct effect or moderate strain outcomes. In addition to these criticisms, Coopers model does not account for other well known researched individual differences such as neuroticism (relating to well-being) and less researched factors such as extroversion and competence (Warr 1987). Conclusions Coopers 1986 model of work-related stress describes the main features of an individuals work and also of his/her home environment. He describes these in the Model of Stress at Work.  Although Coopers model is simplistic, it does give a general overview of how stress can influence an individuals relationships at work and at home.  It could be argued that Coopers model only concentrates on organizational stressors i.e. organizational structure, relationships at work, or career development. That being said, he mentions the feature of intrinsic to job, which is in fact related to occupational stress. Coopers model is still widely use today in the field of occupational psychology, but further revisions need to be made which describe the individuals coping strategies and personality, as they play a major role in the workplace with regards to a persons health. Further research also needs to be conducted on existing data and then it needs to be analysed directly with the H.S.E. My elder brother was very supportive and could often help me collect several picture books, which I could read and narrate the stories to him and my parents. Sometimes, they were very excited not because I could tell the stories well, but because I could spell and pronounced some words in a comical way just because I had developed proper literacy skills. I remember a day when my brother took me for a walk in the nearest town, I forced him to take me to the bookshop and see if I could find some nice story books. Though he was reluctant, he agreed to take me on condition that I would not cry for a book because he did not have enough money. However, the carving for a certain interesting book at the bookshop made me to hide it in my shirt, thinking that no one would know about it. When we reached at the door, I was surprised when the door scanner sounded an alarm; the attendant smiled at me and asked my brother to pay and never to scold at me since I was just a small boy. I was very embarrassed and vowed never to do it again. I went home and was happy to have the book inasmuch as it had disappointed my elder brother.
